Benjamin Britten Concert – Bath Abbey

You are warmly invited to join St Andrew’s School in an exciting event at Bath Abbey on Friday 22nd November at 1:15pm.

The whole school will come together to perform two musical works, Benjamin Britten’s set of songs Friday Afternoons and the world premiere of A Living Tree composed collaboratively by composer Will Gregory and the St Andrew’s pupils.

The concert is the culmination of a remarkable creative arts project called Take One Song that every child in school is participating in this term. The project has been inspired by the work of classical composer Benjamin Britten and the nationwide celebration of the centenary of his birth on 22nd November. You can read more about Britten 100 on the enclosed leaflet and by visiting www.fridayafternoonsmusic.co.uk.

The St Andrew’s School Take One Song project has developed three distinct strands:

Friday Afternoons. After the school choir’s momentous trip to Braunschweig in June this year, the opportunity to perform in a choir has been extended to every pupil. Conducted by Shean Bowers, director of the Bath Abbey Schools Singing Programme, the whole school (130+ children) will perform the set of 12 songs called Friday Afternoons written by Benjamin Britten for children.

A Living Tree. We felt that our love of singing should be celebrated with a new St Andrew’s School song. Composed collaboratively by all the children with help from composer Will Gregory – who, amongst other musical things is producer of the group Goldfrapp – this world premiere performance will feature all our instrumentalists in school as well as singers.

Take One Song. Bath Abbey will also host an exhibition on 22nd – 23rd November showcasing the cross curricular work that has been produced by each class at St Andrew’s School using the Friday Afternoon songs as inspiration. The exhibition will feature both written and creative work including sculptures made by some of the pupils in workshops with the celebrated local artist, Edwina Bridgeman.

The concert is non-ticketed and you are most welcome to bring other people along. We ask that you be seated by 1:00pm for a prompt start at 1:15pm.

Please download the StAndrewsFriday_e-flyer for the concert and spread the word!

We are very much looking forward to the event and hope to see you on the day.

Yours sincerely,
Sue East, Headteacher
