World Book Day: The St Andrew’s Pyjama Party

On the 3rd March, we celebrated World Book Day! In fact, it has been 25 years since World Book Day began. To celebrate at St Andrew’s, we started the day with an assembly: The Masked Reader! Year 6 children (plus a few surprise teachers and TAs!) donned masks and gave clues about their secret text. They then read an excerpt, before the audience could guess what the story was. It was great fun! Not only did the children do a wonderful job of using the clues to solve the puzzle, they also learned lots about other texts that they might want to read next.
As you will know, we are very proud of our recently revamped library. To celebrate being able to use this space and access a range of inspiring new books, the children had a designated time in which they could browse, make a list of books they wish to read and make thoughtful recommendations to friends. They also enjoyed reading and relaxing on the comfy cushions and beanbags.
As if this wasn’t all enough fun, to enhance the ‘bedtime story’ theme of the day, we all enjoyed a hot chocolate topped with marshmallows whilst we continued our reading-themed day inside our classrooms. Although every day is a ‘book day’ at St Andrew’s, we all made the most of enjoying our extra-special activities in our comfy clothes and pyjamas!
Christian in Y6 said, “This is the best World Book Day because of the hot chocolate and new football books. I’m going to ask my parents to help me choose more books!”
I loved sharing some of my favourite books with the children in assembly, and I wonder if you have had time to share what you love most about reading with your families at home? Even if you aren’t in Year 6, I would love you all to stop me if you see me and tell me about the exciting stories,  poetry or interesting non-fiction you’re reading – you can never have too many books to look forward to, after all!
Happy reading!Miss Sandey
