Year 2: London and Hibernation

Year 2 have been learning all about London as part of our Geography lessons. We have been campaigning to encourage people to leave their cars at home and instead use public transport, such as the London Underground, or choose to cycle or, even better, walk. We realised that walking allows you to see some of the most amazing landmarks, many of which the children have recreated as models for their home learning.
We have also been inspired to write some wonderful poetry by comparing the summer and winter glade in Winter’s Sleep, the text we are currently reading in Year 2. This week, we are writing information texts after discovering fascinating facts about hibernation, particularly where and how dormice hibernate. Did you know they can sleep for up to seven months? We have also sketched dormice using sketching pencils and a limited colour palette, creating some beautiful artwork.
In Maths, the children played money games in small groups. They enjoyed pretending to be shopkeepers, counting coins and giving the right change. Year 2 showed how much they had learned about pounds and pence.  In Science, the children tested which materials are best for soaking up spills. They explored the idea of absorbency and will be carrying out their own watery investigations!
