Year 4: Science, English & Sport
Year 4 Science
Our Y4 class started experimenting with sound in science by creating string telephones! They worked in groups and showed resilience, creativity and team-work. All children were able to have a go at communicating through nothing but paper cups and string, and were able to use scientific vocabulary to write a conclusion to explain how it worked!
Y4 English
The children have LOVED becoming journalists over the last couple of weeks, planning, drafting, editing and now publishing their own newspaper articles! The article is based on our class text, Edward Tulane – specifically, the moment he is hurled overboard and into the sea which became the start of his journey.
The children worked hard to create short and snappy headlines (Rabbit Defies Gravity! / Rabbit Sails into Sea!) and worked hard to include the five Ws (Who, What, Where, Why, When?) in their lead. They even learned about the inverted pyramid – a model where they include the most important information first as the editor might want to snip some of their article, and we want to keep all the vital information first!
Oldfield Sports Festival
Year 4 got the chance to go on a sports trip to Oldfield School last week, where they worked in pairs or groups of three to complete a variety of different sporting activities, including skipping, basketball, jumping and hurdles. There were some unfamiliar and new activities but Year 4 listened well to their instructions, tried their best and had lots of fun. Several of our children were spotted for demonstrating ambition and resilience, so they got to write their name on a board for the whole hall to see! After doing all of this, they then had to show their teamwork by working in groups of five to compete against three other schools in a relay race, where they made St Andrew’s proud!
