Year 5: Enterprise Week and Eggs

Entrepreneur, artist, narrator, actor, designer, mathematician, local historian, scientist, chef – just a few of the many roles taken on by Y5 in another bumper-packed learning journey!

The whole class worked incredibly hard (and against the clock!) to present their heart-felt interpretation of Nicola Davis’s ‘The Promise’ for our Class Assembly. In just three days, lines were rehearsed, props created, key scenes dramatized and the Chorus even created their own Soundscape including a beautiful musical motif written by Blythe and performed by Blythe and Matty.

In science, we dissected a hen’s egg, identified the parts and discovered exactly how the yolk stays in the middle! ( it’s all thanks to a couple of clever little ‘anchors’ called the ‘chalazae’.) True to form – Y5 came up with a fascinating range of money-making ideas for the St Andrew’s Enterprise Challenge and ‘The Creation Station’ was established. With raw materials costed (Well done, Django!) and a price point set, it was time to start creating our chosen product: hand-made juggling balls!

Everyone joined the colourful production line, and by the end the day, the class had made over 80 juggling balls for our stall. Would we sell all our stock? Would we make a profit? After a tense few days – Y5 were absolutely delighted to hear they were this year’s top young sellers – making an amazing profit of £125!
