Year 5: Fractions, Trees and Dodgeball
Year 5 have shown fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity across all areas of learning over the past few weeks.
In Science, we have been exploring the properties of materials. This has included experiments where we have decided what makes a good insulator and investigated soluble and insoluble substances. The class have enjoyed the hands-on activities and have developed several Scientific skills.
In PE, we have been developing our dodgeball techniques, concentrating on improving throwing accuracy, blocking techniques and dodging movements. We have applied new skills to games and competitive activities – the children have shown great sportsmanship throughout.
In Art we designed and made our own clay relief metopes based on The Circus. We explored shape, texture and pattern, learning how to create raised designs in clay and looked at using slip to put our sculptures together. The finished pieces show imagination and attention to detail.
In Geography, we have been learning about trees and their importance to the environment. We explored how trees support wildlife, improve air quality and benefit communities. We also used OS maps to decide the best locations in the local area to plant trees. We finished our topic by taking part in a thoughtful debate on whether the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree really mattered.
In English, our class novel has been The Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. Linked to the story, pupils have written their own newspaper reports, learning how to use headlines, subheadings, quotes and formal language. They worked hard to report events clearly and accurately, showing a good understanding of journalistic writing.
In Maths, Year 5 have been building confidence with fractions. We have been learning how to multiply fractions and find fractions of amounts. Pupils have shown great perseverance when tackling more challenging problems.
Well done to Year 5 for their continued hard work, creativity and positive mindset towards learning.
