Year 5: Growing Confidence Across the Curriculum
Year 5 have had a wonderful few weeks, and have really exemplified our school values. It’s been lovely to see them growing in confidence each day.
In English, the children have showed great creativity with their narrative writing inspired by Varjak Paw. They’ve spent time exploring the characters and settings in the novel, and it’s been brilliant watching them use those ideas to shape their own imaginative stories. Their inference on the book and about characters has been a real highlight.
Maths has been equally busy. We’ve been working on strengthening multiplication and division skills, and the class have been tackling square numbers, cube numbers and prime numbers with determination.
Our history topic on Ancient Mesopotamia has sparked a lot of curiosity. The children have enjoyed finding out what life was like thousands of years ago, and they were particularly intrigued by how different groups of people ruled and organised their societies.
In science, Year 5 have been learning how living things are classified. They’ve examined different groups of organisms and created classification keys of their own. This included studying the work of Carl Linnaeus. Their questions and observations have shown a growing sense of scientific enquiry.
Music has been especially lively recently as we’ve been learning to perform Living on a Prayer on the glockenspiels. The children have worked hard to keep in time and play with confidence.
Art has given us a chance to study form and look closely at detail. After studying the work of Elizabeth Blackadder, the children experimented with charcoal to create their own pieces. Alongside this, we also created Remembrance Day silhouettes. The children approached this with real respect and produced thoughtful, atmospheric artwork.
In PSHE, we’ve been discussing different types of bullying and how to recognise and respond to them. The class have shown maturity and kindness, offering ideas on how to support others and make sure our school continues to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
We are all very proud of Year 5’s attitude, curiosity and teamwork. They’ve made a brilliant start, and we’re excited to see what the next few weeks bring.
