STEAM Day: 15th March 2022

STEAM DAY – March 15th 2022

What a wonderful celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Maths!

From Nursery to Y6 we spent the day thinking about ‘growth’; how plants grow, how humans grow, how a pattern can grow, how towers can grow and much more…

Here are just a few snapshots from the day which will give you a flavour of what we got up to.  Thank you to Delia Masanotti for volunteering her time and for taking comments from the children as she visited each class at work!

Rocket parachutes project with Mr Maf

“Is it going to going into space in real life?”

“In the rocket there were bubbles that made it fly!”

Hand span measurement with Mr Harris

– “Having a larger handspan might be useful when playing the piano as we have to stretch our fingers to reach all the notes.”

Year 5 and Year 6 thought about the word ‘anomalies’, some of their results contained anomalies due to measuring errors.  They also discussed the word ‘exception’ – when the results were not as expected.

Focus on hand with Ms Sandey

“It was really difficult to keep my hand still while trying to draw with the other hand. It was difficult not to make the fingers too thin!”

Roman roads engineering with Mr Griggs

Year 3 and 4 loved being outside for this session.  They were delighted to be working with screwdrivers to help make their ‘gromas’ (a Roman surveying instrument).

“To make the road straight, the Romans must have used a compass to know where they wanted to go.”

Balloons with Mrs Shoubridge

“This is a zip line for balloons!!”

“The more air in the balloon, and the straighter the string, the further it goes.”

Drawing nature with Mrs Weaver

“It feels nice and relaxing to look at the plants and draw them.”

Beckford Tower session

“There are towers called radio towers which are used to send signals.”

“Towers are used lo look out and see over lands.”

“It’s cheaper to build into the sky if the land is expensive.”
