Year 3: From Romans to Rocks

Year 3 have been incredibly busy writing, editing and illustrating their non-chronological reports on the Romans in Britain. Everyone has worked with such focus and determination, excited to share all they have learned about our amazing City and the lasting impact of the Roman Empire.
With reports now complete, we’re excited to begun on to our new class book, The Pebble in My Pocket.
Our first challenge – making detailed observational drawing of pebbles. So many pebbles! Each one freshly picked from a beach at Lyme Regis. We’ve been looking closely at shape, texture, colour, line and pattern. Have a look at some of the wonderful sketches Year 3 have produced. We’ve been wondering about the stories these rocks could tell us if they could talk. Where have they come from? What have they seen? Why is one smooth, another jagged and others full of holes? Could that deep scratch be the mark of a dinosaur’s claw? Why does this one sparkle in the light?
With imaginations fired and pencils at the ready, Y3 will be writing poems to capture the journey of a pebble through time.
In geography, we’ve been exploring the awe-inspiring world beneath our feet. From fertile soil down to the bedrock (we discovered that it’s limestone beneath Bath), through the mysterious mantle (which flows like hot treacle) and all the way to the solid core at the centre of the Earth (as hot as the surface of the sun). To bring our learning to life, Year 3 have been busy creating plasticine models of our Earth, carefully adding colours to represent each layer. The moment we cut through our mini-earths was truly exciting as we got to see a cross-section, just like a real geological study! And we learned a song along the way too – Crust! Mantle! Outer Core! Inner Core! (Take a look at our models if you want to know more!)
Year 3’s exploration of local history and geography has been a journey full of discovery, creativity and fabulous writing. We can’t wait to see where our learning takes us next!
