Year 5: Windrush, Healthy Eating & Drumming
It has been another busy few weeks in Year 5, with the children continuing to show enthusiasm, resilience and maturity in all areas of their learning.
In English, we have been writing narratives inspired by Windrush Child. The children have explored the emotions, experiences and perspectives of Leonard, using rich vocabulary and descriptive techniques to bring their stories to life. They have worked particularly hard on developing character and setting, and should be very proud of their thoughtful and engaging writing.
In Science, we have been studying states of matter. The children have investigated how materials can change state, considering reversible and irreversible changes through practical activities and discussions. They have shown great curiosity, asking insightful questions and making links to everyday life.
Our DT lessons have involved planning and designing healthy salads. The children have considered balanced diets, different food groups and flavour combinations, as well as practising their design skills by creating detailed plans. We are very much looking forward to making and tasting these next term.
In History, we have been learning about the contributions and challenges faced by the Windrush generation. The children have demonstrated a mature and respectful attitude when discussing this important topic and its impact on British culture.
In Maths, we have been focusing on area and perimeter. The children have developed their understanding of how to calculate both, applying their knowledge to a range of problems, including reasoning and problem-solving tasks. As a challenge the children designed their own school, considering the dimensions of each building.
In PE, the children have been working on a variety of jumping techniques, both on the apparatus and in floor work, developing their control, coordination and confidence. They have also taken part in tag rugby sessions, learning teamwork, strategy and game skills. We thoroughly enjoyed our recent PE trip, where the children had the opportunity to work alongside Oldfield Secondary School pupils and participate in a range of exciting sports activities. They represented the school brilliantly.
At our Easter Service, the children took on the responsibility of reading out the Easter story. They did an absolutely brilliant job, reading with confidence and pride. They shone throughout!
Finally, in Music, the children have worked hard in their drumming sessions, exploring both traditional rhythms and modern songs. They have developed their sense of timing, rhythm and teamwork, and have shown great enthusiasm and focus throughout.
Well done to all of Year 5 for their continued hard work, positive attitude and excellent behaviour. Keep it up!
